Virginia PreLicensing Requirements

Individual Resident Producer Requirements

To qualify for a resident Virginia insurance producer license, the applicant must satisfy the following requirements:

Exam Requirements

Certificate of Completion

The Virginia Division of Insurance does not require a PLE certificate of completion.

State Reporting Requirements

The Virginia Division of Insurance does not require PLE course completions to be reported.

State Licensing Exam

IMPORTANT: When making a licensing exam reservation, applicants will be required to provide their school code number.  PreLicense.com's Virginia school code number is 2052.

Methods of Registration

Materials Needed to Register

Candidates must present two (2) forms of current signature identification. The primary identification must be government-issued and photo-bearing with a signature and the secondary identification must contain a valid signature. Identification must be in English.

Test Centers and Exam Fees

State Exam Passing Score

Candidates must pass the state licensing exam with a 70% or higher to file a license application.

IMPORTANT: Effective May 1, 2015, Virginia is no longer scoring the General and State portions of the major and personal lines examinations separately. Failing candidates will be required to retake the entire exam. The candidate must wait 24 hours before making a reservation for reexamination. After the third time of failing either section of the exam, Virginia law requires a 30 day waiting period before retaking the exam. After passing the exam, the candidate must apply for and be issued a license within 183 calendar days or the candidate will have to retake the examination.

There are no fingerprint requirements in Virginia.

New Resident Producer Requirements

Applicants for a Virginia resident license who are relocating from another state in which they are licensed are required to file an application and pay required fees but are exempt from the licensing examination. The application must include a “clearance letter” issued by the insurance department in the applicant’s former home state. In addition:

State-Required Product Training

Your state has special training requirements in order for licensed agents to sell the following products:

Long-Term Care:  Before selling, soliciting, or negotiating LTC insurance products in Virginia, producers must complete an initial 8-hour LTC course. The initial training must consist of 6 hours of general LTC topics and 2 hours of LTC Partnership topics.
