Tennessee PreLicensing Requirements 

Individual Resident Producer Requirements

To qualify for a resident Tennessee state insurance producer license, the applicant must satisfy the following requirements:

PreLicense Education Requirements (PLE)

Applicants must complete prelicense education (PLE) for each major line of authority (LOA), as follows:

State Candidate Handbook

Before making an exam reservation Applicants should thoroughly review the State of Tennessee Insurance Candidate Handbook which contains the exam content outlines and important information regarding eligibility and the examination and licensing application process.

PLE Course Delivery

Per Tennessee PLE requirements, applicants are required to complete all of the lessons in the prelicense education course sequentially before they can be issued a certificate of completion.

PLE Course Exam

Certificate of Completion

PreLicense.com provides online, printable certificates of completion in Tennessee.  An applicant must meet Tennessee’s PLE requirements before a certificate of completion is issued.  You must take your certificate of completion with you to the exam site on the day of your examination.  Certificates of completion are valid for 6 months from the completion date.

State Reporting Requirements 

Currently, Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance does not require PLE course completions to be reported to the state.

State Exam Passing Score

Applicants must pass the state licensing exam with a 70% or higher to file a license application.

Exam Retakes

Pursuant to Tennessee rules, applicants who fail an examination must wait at least 30 days before retaking the examination.  If you have not successfully passed the examination within 6 months of the first attempt you will be required to retake a pre-licensing education course.

Fingerprinting Process

Resident applicants are required to submit fingerprints through L-1 Enrollment Services for a background check.

New Resident Producer Requirements

New residents who still hold an active license in their previous home state may not be required to complete prelicense education or take an examination as long as they meet the following requirements:

Fingerprints are not required unless the candidate takes a Tennessee Insurance examination.

Nonresident Producer Requirements

Nonresident license candidates may obtain a Tennessee agent license, without having to complete the prelicense education requirement or take a license examination, as long as they are currently licensed as a resident and in good standing in their home state.

State-Required Product Training

Your state has special training requirements in order for licensed agents to sell the following products:

Long-Term Care:  Before selling, soliciting or negotiating LTC insurance products in Tennessee, producers must complete an initial 8-hour training course.
