South Dakota PreLicensing Requirements
Individual Resident Producer Requirements
To
qualify for a resident South Dakota insurance producer license, the applicant
must satisfy the following requirements:

Exam Requirements
Certificate of Completion
The
South Dakota Division of Insurance does not require a PLE certificate of
completion.
State Reporting Requirements
The
South Dakota Division of Insurance does not require PLE course completions to
be reported.
State Licensing Exam
Methods of Registration
Materials Needed to Register
Candidates
must present a valid form of identification. The primary identification must be
government-issued and photo-bearing with a signature. Identification must
have a name that exactly matches the name used to register for the examination.
Test Centers and Exam Fees
State Exam Passing Score
Candidates
must pass the state licensing exam with a 70% or higher to file a license
application.

who receive a passing score on the state exam will need to apply for the
license online by following the instructions below.

There
are no fingerprint requirements in South Dakota.
New Resident Producer Requirements
If
you are moving to South Dakota and wish to qualify for a South Dakota license
without taking an examination, you must have held the same or a similar
insurance license in your previous state and apply for a license in South
Dakota within 30 days of termination of license in previous home state. Click here for more information
If
you already hold a nonresident license in South Dakota and are moving to South
Dakota, you will be required to submit the following:

Nonresident Producer Requirements
Non-residents
may apply by reciprocity and are exempt from the examination requirement.
License Application Process
Nonresident
license candidates may obtain a South Dakota agent license, without having to
take a license examination, as long as they are currently licensed as a
resident and in good standing in their home state. You must apply for a
new resident producer license within 30 days of termination of previous home

Materials Needed to Apply
If
you are a resident producer in any state that does not currently subscribe to
the PDB you will need to submit a Home State Certification to the South Dakota
Division of Insurance upon application.

There

State-Required Product Training
Your
state has special training requirements in order for licensed agents to sell
the following products:
Long-Term Care: Before selling LTC insurance products in South Dakota, producers
must complete an initial 8-hour, state-approved LTC training
course.
