Mississippi PreLicensing Requirements

Individual Resident Producer Requirements

To qualify for a resident Mississippi insurance producer license, the applicant must satisfy the following requirements:

• Be 18 years of age or older
• Reside or maintain a principal place of residence in Mississippi
• Complete an approved prelicensing course of study (see prelicense requirements below)
• Pass a written examination and file a license application

PreLicense Education Requirements (PLE)

Applicants must complete prelicense education (PLE) for each major line of authority (LOA), as follows:

• 20-hours Mississippi Life Insurance
• 20-hours Mississippi Accident & Health Insurance
• 40-hours Mississippi Life, Accident and Health Insurance
• 20-hours Mississippi Property Insurance
• 20-hours Mississippi Casualty Insurance
• 40-hours Mississippi Property & Casualty Insurance

PLE Course Delivery

• Per Mississippi PLE requirements, applicants are required to complete all of the lessons in the prelicense education course sequentially before they can be issued a certificate of completion.
• Applicants must read each lesson and pass the end-of-chapter quizzes with a 70% or higher to proceed to the next lesson.

PLE Course Exam

• Passing Score:  Applicants must pass the PLE final exam with a 70% or higher to receive a certificate of completion.
• Exam Proctor Requirements:  PreLicense.com final exams must be monitored by a disinterested third party. Proctors must not serve for examinations of family members, relatives, or dependents; employers or supervisors; employees or subordinates; partners, joint ventures, co-owners, or business associates; or for anyone in whom the proctor or instructor has an economic or other interest in assuring the successful outcome of the examination.

Certificate of Completion

PreLicense.com provides online, printable certificates of completion in Mississippi.  An applicant must meet Mississippi’s PLE requirements before a certificate of completion is issued.  Certificates are valid for two years from date of completion.

State Reporting Requirements

PreLicense.com reports PLE course completions electronically to Sircon daily.  The Mississippi Insurance Department charges a $4.00 per name state roster fee for course completion reports.  This state-mandated fee is included in the course price.

Send the registration form with your check or money order in the amount of $85.00 (payable to Testing Services, Inc.) to:

Exam registrations can also be made in person at the Madison office location listed above.  Note:  The registration fee for walk-ins is $100.00 and no personal checks will be accepted at the exam site.

To avoid an additional $15.00 late fee registration must be received at least 3 days prior to the exam date requested.  A confirmation of test date will be sent to the address listed on the registration form.  Candidates must bring the confirmation with them to the testing center on the day of their exam.

State Exam Passing Score

Applicants must pass the Life, Accident and Health state licensing exams with a 65% or higher to file a license application.  Applicants must pass the Property and Casualty state licensing exams with a 70% or higher to file a license application.

Note: If applying for a first-time license through SIRCON, the PLE certificate of completion may be faxed to (601) 359-1951 or emailed to licensing@mid.ms.gov  with a request for on-line approval.

Fingerprinting Process

The Mississippi Insurance Department does not require fingerprints.

New Resident Producer Requirements

New residents will not be required to complete prelicense education or take the license examination as long as:

• A letter of clearance is submitted from previous home state (unless license status can be verified on the National Producer Database)
• Must submit application to the Department within 90 days of clearing their resident license from previous home state.

Nonresident Producer Requirements

Nonresident license candidates may obtain a Mississippi producer license, without having to complete the prelicense education requirement or take a license examination, as long as they are currently licensed as a resident in their home state and in compliance with continuing education requirements in their home state.

Fingerprinting Process

There are no fingerprint requirements for nonresidents in Mississippi.
