Louisiana PreLicensing Requirements

Individual Resident Producer Requirements

To qualify for a resident Louisiana insurance producer license, the applicant must satisfy the following requirements:

Be 18 years of age or older
Must be a US citizen or have a current work authorization
Reside or maintain a principal place of residence in Louisiana
Complete an approved prelicensing course of study (see prelicense requirements below)
Submit fingerprints
Pass a written examination and file a license application

PreLicense Education Requirements (PLE)

Applicants must complete prelicense education (PLE) for each major line of authority (LOA), as follows:

20-hours Louisiana Life Insurance
20-hours Louisiana Accident & Health Insurance
40-hours Louisiana Life, Accident and Health Insurance
20-hours Louisiana Property Insurance
20-hours Louisiana Casualty Insurance
40-hours Louisiana Property & Casualty Insurance

Before making an exam reservation Applicants should thoroughly review the Louisiana Insurance Department Licensing Information Bulletin which contains the exam content outlines and important information regarding eligibility and the examination and licensing application process.

PLE Course Delivery

Per Louisiana PLE requirements, applicants are required to complete all of the lessons in the prelicense education course sequentially before they can be issued a certificate of completion.
Applicants must read each lesson and pass the end-of-chapter quizzes with a 70% or higher to proceed to the next lesson.

PLE Course Exam

Passing Score: Applicants must pass the PLE final exam with a 70% or higher to receive a certificate of completion.
Exam Proctor Requirements: The PLE final exam does not require a proctor.

Certificate of Completion

PreLicense.com provides online, printable certificates of completion in Louisiana. An applicant must meet Louisiana’s PLE requirements before a certificate of completion is issued. Certificates are valid for one year.

State Reporting Requirements

PreLicense.com reports course completions to the Louisiana Department of Insurance daily.

State Licensing Exam

Beginning March 2, 2015 PSI Exams administers the licensing examinations in Louisiana.
Important: Before registering and sitting for the exam, candidates must submit their license application online at www.nipr.com.

You can register for a license examination within 24 hours of LDI’s receipt of the license application. Do not contact PSI until at least 24 hours after you have filed through NIPR.

Materials Needed at Testing Center

Candidates must present 2 forms of government-issued or state-issued form of identification. The name of the identification must match exactly the name used to register for the exam.

State Exam Passing Score

Applicants must pass the state licensing exam with a 70% or higher to file a license application.

There is no limit to the number of times you may take an exam within the one-year period allotted for each application as long as the license application and prelicensing certificate are still current.

New Resident Producer Requirements

New residents will not be required to complete prelicense education or take the license examination as long as:

You are currently licensed in previous home state
A license application is submitted to the Department within 90 days of cancellation of previous home state license
Are in good standing in previous home state or were licensed in good standing for line of authority requested in the state’s producer database records

Fingerprinting Process

New resident applicants who are not already licensed in Louisiana as a nonresident will be required to be fingerprinted.

Nonresident Producer Requirements

Nonresident license candidates may obtain a Louisiana producer license, without having to complete the prelicense education requirement or take a license examination, as long as they are currently licensed as a resident in their home state and in compliance with continuing education requirements in their home state.

Fingerprinting Process

There are no fingerprint requirements for nonresidents in Louisiana.

State-Required Product Training

Your state has special training requirements in order for licensed agents to sell the following products:

Long-Term Care Training: Before selling, soliciting, or negotiating LTC/LTCP insurance products, a producer must complete an initial 8-hour state-approved LTC/LTCP training course.
