Connecticut PreLicensing Requirements 

Individual Resident Producer Requirements

To qualify for a resident Connecticut state insurance producer license, the applicant must satisfy the following requirements:

PreLicense Education Requirements (PLE)

Applicants must complete prelicense education (PLE) for each major line of authority (LOA), as follows:

Certificate of Completion

PreLicense.com provides online, printable certificates of completion in Connecticut.  An applicant must meet Connecticut’s PLE requirements before a certificate of completion is issued.   Once the PLE certificate has been issued by PreLicense.com, the student can register for the corresponding state licensing exam.  Certificates are valid for one year from the date of issue.

Currently, the Connecticut Insurance Department does not require PLE course completions to be reported.

State Exam Passing Score

Applicants must pass the state licensing exam with a 70% or higher to file a license application.

License Application Process

Important: Passing an exam does not guarantee that you will be issued a license. You must submit all application materials and fees to the Department within one year of completing your prelicense course and passing your exam.  Issuance of a license depends on review and approval of all license application materials.

There are no fingerprint requirements in the state of Connecticut.

New Resident Producer Requirements

New residents will not be required to complete prelicense education or take the license examination as long as:

New residents who do not apply within the 90-day time period will be required to meet Connecticut's prelicense education and examination requirements.

There are no fingerprint requirements in the state of Connecticut.

Nonresident Producer Requirements

Nonresident license candidates may obtain a Connecticut producer license, without having to complete the prelicense education requirement or take a license examination, as long as they are currently licensed as a resident and in good standing in their home state.  In addition, applicants must hold an equivalent license in their home state.

State-Required Product Training

Your state has special training requirements in order for licensed agents to sell the following products:

Annuity Training: All producers licensed to sell, solicit, and negotiate annuity products must complete a one-time annuity training course approved for at least 4 hours prior to selling, soliciting, or negotiating such products. Producers who hold a life insurance line of authority and who desire to sell annuities must complete the training requirement within 6 months of the effective date.

Additional fees for state filing, books or shipping may apply at the time you register to begin taking the product training course.
